Group 1 Presentation: Signifying Gender

   Summary:

Humanity's obsession with categorization is often seen as harmless. However, when it assumes such a great part of our social world, it is something that cannot be simply ignored. Categorization is the result of our desire to define and explain the functions of the world. One particular form of categorization is the act of signifying genders, where both tangible and intangible things are tied to society's definition of gender. Our presentation will address the signification of gender is tied to social contexts that are constructed by society. It is implemented across all age groups with little restrictions, from toys and colors to movies and clothing. As a result, it constructs and assumes the male/female image that society demands. Awareness and education come essential tools in combating the imposing identities that society has created.
